Climate’s Last Call: How will we counter? ( An assessment of Indian Strategies towards Climate Change and the upcoming role of Galaxy Climate)

The world is at a risk, gradual but high. The Emission Reductions From Pandemic Had Unexpected Effects on the Atmosphere. Spasmodically, most of the air emissions were curbed, and the air quality index hits the safest figures. With this good news, scientists found certain anomalies. Due to depletion in NOx concentrations, a global reduction of Ozone was witnessed since in the process of formation of NOx and in its reaction with VOCs, the ground Ozone formation is initiated. The relation between the NOx and Ozone levels can be read here. Adding to the misery, the self-cleansing capacity of air has also abated, making the air sick and unable to cleanse itself of gases like methane (a greenhouse gas). Thus Methane compounded by 0.30% in the last year(which is greater than its increment in the last decade). Due to the diminution of surface Albedo Effect, the Arctic is experiencing a threefold increment in the temperature and records the 10th lowest winter ice peak in 2022. Every year in the Spring, the Saharan Dust brings 22,000 tonnes of Phosphorus and nutrients laden air to the Amazon Rainforests fostering its good sustenance. But this year, a severe degradation in the air quality is witnessed in large parts of Spain and France due to this motion of dust. Also, the frequency and magnitude of this nutrient-laden dust are expected to drastically reduce in the coming years. Reviewing the above cases, it is hard to state that these activities have human intervention. But this is similar to the pieces of dominoes. Upon being honest, we find ourselves to be the one who has pushed the very first piece by our neglect. You might wonder, “How can a small act of mine be so catastrophic?” Just to state one, “ Do you smoke?” If yes, well, you must know that a 2 percent reduction in emissions of ETS would be equivalent to eliminating all the coal-fired power plants in the United States (Smith, 1993b). This era has been titled as ‘Anthropogenic Era’ for obvious reasons.

Introduce Yourself : Who am I ?

Hola! ever thought how our actions carve the paths of life? Every action has a reaction. And good ones bear sweet fruits! 안녕하십니까 ,This is my first blog in the Outreachy 22 intern blogs and experiences. I am Soumya Jha , a 22 year old Environment major. Hailing from the small state of Jharkhand in India, I have big dreams. I’ve been selected as an intern to the Galaxy Community under the Outreachy 22 cohort. I will be working on the contribution of tools to the Galaxy toolshed and certain documentations for Climate protection on a regional level. Climate in itself is a huge and sensitive topic, a serious discussion of which is the need of the hour. Discussing the core values, I believe, optimism is my biggest strength. It is my sword on those bad days when things don’t go that well. Working until the goal is met is something I believe in. Second value is diligence. Smart work is equally important but with a mix of diligence. It’s said that by being persistent, one can move mountains. Focus and discipline are two important factors, determining how we will be tomorrow. Added to these, I have a strong faith in destiny. Things will come to us only at the right time, when it is destined to. All that’s needed is to not stop and never give up!

Everybody Struggles

Hey there, welcome to my second experience in the series of blogs as a part of the Outreachy 2022. Ever stuck on something, which seems impossibly achievable and confusing? Days have passed, well, I’ve moved to week 3. It seems intimidating at times. With advancing weeks, the level of work has also increased. You can easily get confused when you have a lot on your plate. ‘Everybody struggles’, this indeed is so true. It may be any struggle related to adjusting with people or managing time and priorities or some particular work or something with concepts or hardware. Nothing is easy. The first week was one the best and smoothest weeks as the work was very much familiar and I aced my deadline. As I entered the second week, the complexity of work increased. To be very honest, I started putting in more and more hours to keep up with the deadline. This was one incident when I knew how to complete the task but my Linux OS started behaving abnormally. And there were several instances when I didn’t even know where to start. Usually things take more time than we expect. This leads to a struggle with the deadline. I focused on trying to solve the issues on my own, as much as possible, and ended up wasting several hours. Then, I used to contact my mentor to discuss my issues. Most of the time, my hardest doubts were easiest for my mentor. She solved them just like this! Thus what I believed, a hesitation towards asking doubts is the main issue for ourselves. Along with solving my doubts, my mentors amazingly guided me on my achievable to save me hours. If something is too hard, they would mould the idea into an easily achievable target. Thus just not sitting back, searching, researching and asking is the best idea to lessen our struggles.
